EMPOWERING MEMBERS THROUGH EDUCATION

As part of the 21st Century Committee mandates, we have been restructuring things at the Council.  One of the things we have done is create our own Education Department.  We will be offering our own trainings; as well as, keeping you abreast of any other education opportunities available to you.

Keep your eye on this page for more information and updates!

Re: AFSCME Local Union Leadership Academy

In March, April and May we will be rolling out the AFSCME Local Leadership Academy for all Council 62 locals. The Leadership Academy is a two-day, state of the art training designed to help local unions develop the skills they need to fight to win in the current difficult economic and political environment and on into their future.

Class topics include:

? AFSCME Structure

? Building a Strong Union

? Executive Board’s Key Roles

? Officers’ Duties and Responsibilities

? Local Union Committees

? Running Union Meetings that Matter

? Political Action – Why It Matters

? Developing local union goals and objectives and plans to meet them

This training will take place over two consecutive days, a Saturday and a Sunday. The dates are as follows:

Indianapolis, IN: March 26 – 27, 2011

Covington, KY: May 14 – 15, 2011

The class is designed to be taken by an entire Local Union Leadership team.

This means that it is essential for a significant majority (at least 75%) of your current activists to attend from beginning to end on both days. (E.g., if there are 7 active leaders in your facility or area, no less than five must attend; if there are 9, at least 7 must attend). Also, each local must bring at least two "Next Wavers," activists who are 35 years old or under. We hope to see you there!

The Leadership Academy will pay for double occupancy sleeping rooms, food, and training costs associated with the program. Locations will be announced shortly. If you have to travel two hours or more to get to the location, a reservation will be made for you on the Friday before the training.

To build strong local unions and a strong voice statewide, it is imperative that as many local leaders and activists attend as is possible. Enclosed you will find a commitment/registration form that will need to be submitted to LaQuita Alsum, to confirm your participation.

In solidarity,

David Warrick

Executive Director
